It’s estimated that nearly half the Australian population (45 per cent) will experience some sort of mental health condition such as anxiety or depression, in their lifetime, according to beyondblue.
Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in this country, and more than two million Australians will have anxiety in any given year. Women are more likely to experience the condition, with one in three women experiencing anxiety, compared with one in five men.
Some of the common types of anxiety conditions include generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, phobias and panic disorder – there are other types of anxiety too, and some people may experience more than one of these conditions at the same time, complicating their diagnosis.
According to the experts, anxiety is caused by a combination of factors including personality, life experiences and physical health.
“Some people who experience anxiety conditions may have a genetic predisposition towards anxiety and these conditions can sometimes run in a family. However, having a parent or close relative experience anxiety or other mental health condition doesn’t mean you’ll automatically develop anxiety,” beyondblue’s website says.
Also, people with certain personality traits are more likely to have anxiety. “For example, children who are perfectionists, easily flustered, timid, inhibited, lack self-esteem or want to control everything, sometimes develop anxiety during childhood, adolescence or as adults,” says beyondblue.
There are plenty of well-documented strategies to help manage anxiety – the first of which is to seek professional support from a GP, counsellor or natural health practitioner.
Using crystals to help manage anxiety
I’m often asked about which are the best crystals to help those with anxiety – in fact this blog post was inspired by about five separate conversations in a 7-day period, with mothers or grandmothers of children who suffered anxiety, and were looking for natural remedies to help.
While I’m not a medical doctor and cannot/do not offer medical advice, crystals can help to alleviate anxiety, just as they can help to alleviate many other physical, emotional and mental conditions.
I’ve researched and sourced this list from reputable crystal books such as The Crystal Bible, The Book of Stones, my various crystal healing teachers and through my own client work as a shamanic crystal healer.
This list is offered as a guide about where to start if you or a loved one have anxiety, and you are looking to use crystals to support the healing journey.
Different crystals effect different people in different ways – so my advice is to read the descriptions and see if any particular meanings resonate with you. Then spend some time working with one or two crystals at a time to see if you notice any physical, mental or emotional changes.
Which crystals help with anxiety?
Aventurine – stimulates emotional recovery and enables living within one’s own heart. Physically, Aventurine promotes a feeling of well-being. Green Aventurine is a comforter and heart healer, and general harmoniser, protecting the heart. It brings things back into control and is useful in malignant conditions. It’s an all-round healer, bringing in well-being and emotional calm.
Chrysoprase – psychologically, chrysoprase is calming, creating openness to new situations. This stone opposes judgementalism, stimulating acceptance of oneself and others. It is useful for forgiveness and compassion. It lifts oppressive and recurrent images, preventing nightmares, especially in children. Emotionally, chrysoprase brings a sense of security and trust. It is also useful in healing codependence, supporting independence and yet encouraging commitment. Chrysoprase is excellent for relaxation and peaceful sleep, and also helps to reduce claustrophobia and nightmares.
Emerald – opens the heart chakra and has a calming effect on the emotions. This stone ensures physical, emotional, and mental equilibrium. It eliminates negativity and brings in positive actions. Focusing intention and raising consciousness, it brings about positive action. Psychologically this crystal gives the strength of character to overcome the misfortunes of life. It is a stone of regeneration and recovery and can heal negative emotions. It enhances the ability to enjoy life to the fullest. It is a wisdom stone, promoting discernment and truth, and aiding eloquent expression. It helps bring to the surface what is unconsciously known.
Green Calcite – is a mental healer, dissolving rigid beliefs and old programs and restoring balance to the mind. It helps in letting go of what is familiar and comforting but which no longer serves, and aids communication and the transition from a stagnant to a positive situation. This stone calms the adrenals, and soothes anger-generated disease.
Hematite – this beautiful metallic crystal is an excellent grounding stone, which helps to harmonise mind, body and spirit. It dissolves negative energy and helps to prevent negative energies from entering the aura. This crystal helps to boost self-esteem, enhance willpower and reliability, and impart confidence.
Kunzite encourages self-expression and allows free expression of feelings. It removes obstacles from your path and helps you to adjust to the pressure of life. It can aid in recovering memories that have been blocked. It is a useful healer for people who had to grow up too fast, bringing back lost trust and innocence. It promotes the quality of tolerance for the self and others. Kunzite is helpful in reducing stress-related anxiety. Mentally, Kunzite facilitates introspection and the ability to act on constructive criticism. It has the power to combine intellect, intuition and inspiration. Kunzite can be used to clear emotional debris and to free up the emotions, healing heartache, especially that carried forward from other lives. It clears resistance and assists in effecting compromises between personal needs and those of others. Kunzite’s mood-lifting effect is helpful in depression arising from emotional causes. It is excellent for alleviating panic attacks.
Labradorite – banishes fears and insecurities and the psychic debris from previous disappointments, including those experienced in past lives. It strengthens faith in the self and trust in the universe. It removes other people’s projections, including thought forms that have hooked into the aura. Labradorite calms an overactive mind and energises the imagination bringing up new ideas. Analysis and rationality are balanced with the inner sight. This crystal brings contemplation and introspection. It is an excellent dispeller of illusions, going to the root of a matter and showing the real intention behind thoughts and actions. This stone brings up suppressed memories from the past. Labradorite is a useful companion through change, imparting strength and perseverance. It is a powerful stone of transformation.
Moonstone – calms overreactions to situations and to emotional triggers. Moonstone is filled with receptive, passive, feminine energy. It balances male-female energies and aids men who want to get in touch with their feminine side. It is the perfect antidote for the excessively macho man or overly aggressive female. Emotionally, Moonstone soothes emotional instability and stress, and stabilises the emotions. It improves emotional intelligence. Moonstone provides deep emotional healing and heals disorders of the upper digestive tract that are related to emotional stress. Physically, Moonstone powerfully affects the female reproductive cycle and alleviates menstrual-related dis-ease and tension. It is linked to the pineal gland and balances the hormonal system, stabilises fluid imbalances, and attunes to the biorhythmic clock. It is helpful in cases of shock and can be used to calm hyperactive children.
Pyrite – relieves anxiety and frustration and boosts self worth and confidence. Emotionally, Pyrite is helpful for melancholy and deep despair. Physically, this crystal increases energy and overcomes fatigue.
Rose Quartz – gently draws off negative energy, and replaces it with loving vibes. It strengthens empathy and sensitivity and aids the acceptance of necessary change. It is an excellent stone for mid-life crisis. Holding Rose Quartz enhances positive affirmations. The stone can then remind you of your intention. This beautiful stone promotes receptivity to beauty of all kinds. Emotionally, Rose Quartz is the finest healer. Releasing emotions and heartache and transmuting emotional conditioning that no longer serves, it soothes internalised pain and heals deprivation. Rose Quartz teaches you how to love yourself, vital if you have thought yourself unlovable. You cannot accept love from others nor love them unless you love yourself. This stone encourages self-forgiveness and acceptance, and invokes self-trust and self-worth.
Rutilated quartz – assists in moving to a core life to access causes and to understand the results of previous actions. It connects to soul lessons and the plan for the present life. Psychologically, this crystal reaches the root of problems and facilitates transitions and a change of direction. Emotionally, rutilated quartz soothes dark moods and acts as an antidepressant. It relieves fears, phobias, and anxiety, releasing constrictions and countering self-hatred. This stone promotes forgiveness at all levels.
How to use crystals to assist managing anxiety
There are a number of ways of using crystals for any kind of crystal healing. here are a few suggestions:
- Carry some of the crystals listed above (or any crystal which makes you feel calm) in a small bag, in your pocket, down your bra or in your bag – even just knowing that you have a physical “prop” can help you to be more grounded if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
- Create a crystal grid in your home, using some of the stones, and use this as a focal point to meditate for a few minutes each day. You could also create a mini grid with some of the same stones, and place it on your desk.
- If you are feeling particularly anxious and you able to lie down in a quiet place for 10-15 minutes, intuitively place some of these crystals over your heart and breathe slowly and deeply. Count to five as you breathe in, and count to five again as you breathe out – this will help to calm you down.
- Use positive affirmations and self-talk! Use the crystals as physical anchors to remind you that you are loved, and that you are worthy etc. Choose your favourite affirmation or inspirational quote and repeat this throughout the day.
